Grace is the great equalizer.

After the finality of an imposed prison sentence sets in, it brings an incarcerated individual to a crossroads. Will they choose to remain on their path of self-sufficiency, or decide to make a change?

To decide to change is a tough course to chart and will require the acceptance that previous ideas they once embraced about themselves might not be true. Inner healing is a messy business and will often require a decision to be made in that direction each and every day. And it is our belief that these positive decisions should be rewarded.

U.T.U.R.N. is a system that we have developed to showcase these small but diligent decisions to the Pardon and Parole Board. It is a "Uniform Table for Understanding Restorative Needs" and it's purpose is to present tangible evidence to the Board that a noteworthy change has been made. The purpose of rehabilitation is to bring about a change in a person's mind, and this tool has the ability to demonstrate those changes to people who have the knowledge and authority to change in incarcerated person's circumstances.

Our everyday, practical definition of "diligence" is "choosing to do a little thing, for a long time, until something BIG happens." In prison, choices to grow or regress are often recorded and documented, and this data is used in U.T.U.R.N. to chart a model of a person's growth and maturity. We use a specific point system and assign values to certain behaviors that are documented and use this formula to determine an evidence-based trajectory in their life.

This will not be beneficial for anyone who has not experienced a change in their minds, but for those who have, this system can be added to a person's efforts to obtain a favorable commutation or parole.

This analysis can be provided by itself to a client or can be added to their efforts to obtain a parole or commutation of their sentence.

Commutations

Any individual who is incarcerated in Oklahoma is eligible to apply for commutation. Commutation is a separate process from parole, and is not automatic. This process is designed to correct unjust and excessive sentences, and can be completed by the person in prison, or with the help of an attorney, and also with the help of friends or family.

Parole Hearings

For most incarcerated individuals in Oklahoma, Parole is an automatic procedure that takes place after you have served a designated amount of time. U.T.U.R.N. can be useful in this process to demonstrate to the Pardon and Parole Board that an incarcerated individual has a new track record of making documented and beneficial decisions.

U.T.U.R.N. Analysis

We have developed a tool, known as the "Uniform Table for Understanding Restorative Needs", for summarizing an individual's conduct in prison. The data we collect is charted and used as an illustration to demonstrate to the Pardon and Parole Board tangible changes that have occurred in a person's behavior and mindset, based on outward actions and decisions. The Board's focus should be on who you are right now, and not who you were back then,
